We have 4 cars taking part in this year’s rally, with a mix of staff and car enthusiasts. We’re proud to be sponsoring this event, which kicks off on 23 May and concludes on 26 May 2025. The rally will travel through Bendigo, Mildura, Horsham, Ararat, Ballarat… and most places in between!

We’re calling on friends, family and clients to help support this important cause – a 4 day, 1,500 kilometre conversation with your mates about mental health in today’s world. Not only is it an opportunity to explore regional Victoria, but it also raises vital funds for the incredible work Beyond Blue does across Australia every day.

If you’d like to be part of this epic journey, you can find more details here.

If you’re in a position to make a tax-deductible donation, our fundraising page can be found here.

Running a small business is an exciting and rewarding endeavour but comes with a fair share of responsibilities.

Among the most important are the financial obligations that keep your business compliant and financially healthy. That’s where an accountant can be your best ally. With their expertise, accountants can help small businesses navigate the complexities of financial management, ensuring that everything runs smoothly.

Here’s how an accountant can assist you in meeting your obligations, all while allowing you to focus on what you do best—growing your business.

1. Keeping Your Books in Order

One of an accountant’s primary responsibilities is managing your business’s bookkeeping. Accurate and up-to-date records are crucial for understanding financial health and making informed decisions. An accountant will ensure that all your financial transactions are recorded correctly, from sales and expenses to payroll and tax payments.

For example, if you run a small retail shop, your accountant can track daily sales, manage inventory costs, and reconcile bank statements. This helps you keep a clear picture of your business’s financial status and makes tax time a lot less stressful.

2. Tax Compliance Made Easy

Navigating the world of taxes can be daunting for any small business owner. From understanding the various types of taxes you must pay—like income tax, GST, and PAYG withholding—to lodging returns on time, there’s a lot to keep track of. This is where an accountant’s expertise is invaluable.

Your accountant will ensure your business complies with all relevant tax laws and regulations. They’ll help you prepare and lodge your tax returns accurately and on time, avoiding penalties and interest charges. Plus, they can identify any potential deductions or credits you might be eligible for, helping you minimise your tax liability.

For instance, if you’re a sole trader offering consulting services, your accountant can help you claim deductions for home office expenses, travel costs, and professional development—saving you money while staying compliant.

3. Guiding You Through Payroll and Superannuation

If you have employees, payroll and superannuation can be particularly challenging. Ensuring your staff is paid correctly and on time, managing PAYG withholding, and making superannuation contributions are all critical obligations. An accountant can handle these tasks for you, ensuring you meet all your payroll obligations without a hitch.

They can also help you navigate the complexities of superannuation, ensuring you’re paying the correct amount into your employees’ super funds. For example, if you run a small café with part-time staff, your accountant will ensure that super contributions are made accurately and in line with current regulations.

4. Providing Financial Insights and Advice

Beyond managing day-to-day obligations, an accountant can offer valuable financial insights that help you make informed business decisions. They can analyse your financial statements, identify trends, and advise on areas like cash flow management, budgeting, and cost control.

For instance, if you plan to expand your business or invest in new equipment, your accountant can help you understand the financial implications and create a strategy that aligns with your goals. Their advice can be a game-changer, helping you grow your business sustainably.

5. Supporting Business Growth and Planning

As your business grows, your financial obligations will evolve. An accountant can help you plan for the future, whether expanding your operations, taking on new staff, or exploring new markets. They can assist with financial forecasting, budgeting, and even securing financing.

For example, if you’re a small e-commerce business looking to expand your product range, your accountant can help you project future cash flows, budget for new inventory, and even assist with securing a business loan.

Having an accountant by your side is one of the best investments you can make for your small business. They help you stay on top of your financial obligations and provide the guidance and support you need to grow your business with confidence.

With their expertise, you can focus on what you do best—running your business—while knowing that your finances are in good hands. If you’re a small business owner, consider partnering with an accountant (like us) today to ensure your business’s success and peace of mind.

Superannuation is one of the most essential tools you have for securing a comfortable retirement.

While most people are familiar with the basics—like making contributions and choosing investment options—some hidden gems within the superannuation system can really make a difference.

Whether you’re just starting out or on your way to retirement, here are some lesser-known superannuation secrets that could help you get the most out of your nest egg.

1. Boost Your Partner’s Super—And Get a Tax Break Too!

Did you know that you can boost your partner’s superannuation by making contributions on their behalf? This is especially helpful if your spouse earns a lower income or takes time off work, like during parental leave.

For instance, let’s say your spouse earns less than $37,000 a year. By contributing $3,000 to their super fund, you could receive a tax offset of up to $540. Not only does this help grow your partner’s super, but it also gives you a nice little tax break. It’s a simple way to support each other and ensure you have a healthy retirement fund.

2. Insurance Inside Super—Convenient, But With a Few Things to Consider

Most people don’t realise that their superannuation fund typically includes some form of insurance, such as life insurance, total and permanent disability (TPD) insurance, and income protection. It’s a convenient way to ensure you’re covered, but there are a few things to keep in mind.

For example, while the premiums are automatically paid from your super balance, making it easier on your wallet, these payments can slowly chip away at your super savings. Plus, the default coverage might not be enough for your needs, especially if you’ve got a growing family or specific financial commitments. It’s worth checking in on your insurance coverage to make sure it’s the right fit for you and adjusting if needed.

3. Accessing Your Super Early—A Lifeline in Tough Times

While super is generally locked away until you reach retirement age, there are certain situations where you can access it early. This can be a real lifeline during tough times, but many people aren’t aware of these options.

Imagine you’re facing severe financial hardship, such as falling behind on your mortgage. If you’ve been receiving government income support payments for at least 26 weeks and can’t meet your living expenses, you might be able to access some of your super to help out.

Or, if you’re dealing with a terminal illness, you can access your super tax-free, providing crucial support when you need it most.

4. Lost Super—There Could Be Hidden Money Waiting for You

Believe it or not, billions of dollars in superannuation are sitting unclaimed in lost super accounts. This happens when people change jobs, move, or forget to update their super fund details, leading to multiple accounts or unclaimed super.

Take a moment to check for any lost super through the MyGov website. You might be surprised to find accounts you’ve forgotten about.

By consolidating these into your main super fund, you can save on fees and give your retirement balance a nice little boost. It’s like finding hidden treasure, and every little bit counts toward a more comfortable retirement.

5. Salary Sacrificing—A Smart, Tax-Efficient Way to Grow Your Super

Salary sacrificing is a strategy whereby a portion of your pre-tax income is paid directly into your superannuation account. It’s a simple and tax-efficient way to grow your retirement savings, yet not everyone fully understands how powerful it can be.

Here’s an example: If you’re earning $100,000 a year and decide to salary sacrifice $10,000 into your super, you’ll pay just 15% tax on that $10,000 instead of your usual marginal tax rate. That’s a great way to save on taxes while boosting your super balance.

Just remember to keep an eye on the contribution caps to avoid any extra tax penalties.

Wrapping It Up

Superannuation is more than just a retirement savings account—it’s a powerful tool with features many people don’t fully appreciate.

From making contributions for your spouse to discovering lost super and using tax-efficient strategies like salary sacrificing these lesser-known aspects can make a difference in your financial future.

Taking the time to explore these options and making informed decisions now can help you maximise your superannuation benefits and secure a more comfortable retirement.

Whether you’re just starting out or well on your way to retirement, knowing these superannuation secrets can give you a valuable edge and peace of mind for the years to come.

It’s important to know how the tax-free threshold works, especially if you’re earning income from more than one job.

Many people mistakenly claim the tax-free threshold from multiple employers, which can lead to an unexpected tax bill.

This guide will help you understand how to manage the tax-free threshold while juggling multiple sources of income, so you can keep your finances in check.

Getting to Know the Tax-Free Threshold

The tax-free threshold allows you to earn up to $18,200 each year without paying any tax. It’s a great benefit for Australian residents, especially for those on lower incomes. Understanding how this threshold works is key to making sure you’re not caught off guard when tax time rolls around.

Which Incomes Count Toward the Tax-Free Threshold?

It’s important to remember that the tax-free threshold applies to your total income, not just what you earn from one job. This includes:

Salaries and wages from your employers

Payments from government agencies

Income from work done under an Australian Business Number (ABN)

How to Claim the Tax-Free Threshold

You can only claim the tax-free threshold from one employer at a time. When you start a new job, your employer will ask if you want to claim the tax-free threshold. If you’re already claiming it from another job, you should let them know by answering “no.” This will help you avoid any tax-related issues later on.

What Happens If You Claim the Tax-Free Threshold from Multiple Employers?

If you mistakenly claim the tax-free threshold from more than one employer, you might not have enough tax withheld from your total income. This can happen if:

Your combined income from all employers exceeds $18,200, and

You’ve claimed the tax-free threshold from more than one job

When this happens, you could end up with a tax bill that needs to be paid as a lump sum at the end of the financial year. No one likes surprises like that, so it’s best to get it right from the start.

How to Avoid an Unexpected Tax Bill

To steer clear of any tax surprises at the end of the financial year, here’s what you can do:

Claim the Tax-Free Threshold from Just One Employer: Choose the employer who pays you the most.

Notify Your Other Employers: If you need to stop claiming the tax-free threshold from one of your jobs, simply fill out a Withholding Declaration form and give it to your employer.

Keep an Eye on Your Income: Make sure you’re aware of how much you’re earning from all sources so you don’t exceed the threshold without enough tax being withheld.

Managing Study or Training Support Loans with Multiple Employers

If you have a study or training support loan, like a HECS-HELP or SFSS loan, it’s important to let each of your employers know. You’ll need to make compulsory repayments if:

You still have a study loan when you lodge your tax return, and

Your repayment income is above the minimum threshold

Steps to Take

Inform Your Employers: Make sure all your employers know about your study loan so they can withhold enough for your compulsory repayments.

Adjust Withholding Amounts: You can use a Withholding Declaration form to ensure your employers are withholding the right amount to cover your loan repayments.

Making Voluntary Repayments

You’re always welcome to make voluntary repayments to reduce your study loan balance. But remember, if your repayment income is above the threshold, you’ll still need to make compulsory repayments even if you’ve made voluntary ones.

Managing Tax If You’re a Sole Trader or Earn Through Online Platforms

If you earn income as an employee and also as a sole trader or through online platforms, managing your tax is crucial to avoid surprises.

Prepaying Tax on Business Income

As an employee, your employer takes care of withholding tax from your pay. But as a self-employed individual, you’re responsible for the tax on your business income. To avoid a big tax bill at the end of the year:

Pay As You Go (PAYG) Instalments: You can prepay tax on your business income throughout the year using PAYG instalments. This spreads out your tax liability, making it easier to manage than paying a large sum at tax time.

Understanding and managing the tax-free threshold is key to staying on top of your finances, especially if you have multiple sources of income.

By claiming the tax-free threshold from only one employer and carefully managing any study loans or additional income, you can avoid unexpected tax bills and keep your financial situation under control.

If you’re ever unsure about your tax situation, don’t hesitate to seek advice from a tax professional.

As a business owner, you’re always on the lookout for ways to grow and adapt in an ever-changing market.

One strategy that many businesses consider is product diversification. Simply put, this means expanding your product line or offering new products that complement your existing ones.

But like any business strategy, product diversification has its pros and cons. Let’s dive into how it can work wonders and where it can fall short, with real-world examples to guide the way.

What is Product Diversification?

Product diversification involves adding new products or services to your existing lineup. This could mean branching out into entirely new markets or creating variations of your current products. The goal is to attract new customers, increase market share, and reduce risk by not relying on a single product or market.

When Product Diversification Works

Apple: From Computers to Gadgets
Apple started as a computer company, but its foray into consumer electronics is a textbook example of successful product diversification. The introduction of the iPod in 2001 revolutionised the way people listened to music. This success paved the way for other groundbreaking products like the iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch. By diversifying its product line, Apple didn’t just survive—it became one of the most valuable companies in the world.
Why It Worked:

Innovation: Apple introduced products that were not just new but revolutionary, meeting unfulfilled consumer needs.

Brand Loyalty: Customers who loved Apple’s computers were likelier to buy its other products, creating a loyal customer base across multiple product lines.

Coca-Cola: Expanding Beyond Soft Drinks
Coca-Cola is another great example. While it’s best known for its iconic soft drink, the company has successfully diversified into other beverages, including bottled water (Dasani), sports drinks (Powerade), and even coffee (Costa Coffee). This diversification has allowed Coca-Cola to reach a broader audience and reduce its reliance on the carbonated drinks market, which has been facing challenges in recent years.
Why It Worked:

Market Insight: Coca-Cola recognised the shifting consumer preferences toward healthier options and diversified accordingly.

Strong Distribution Network: The company leveraged its existing distribution channels to introduce new products efficiently.

When Product Diversification Doesn’t Work

Harley-Davidson: The Perfume Debacle
Harley-Davidson is synonymous with motorcycles, embodying freedom and the open road. However, in the 1990s, the company tried to capitalize on its brand by launching a line of perfumes and colognes. The products didn’t resonate with Harley’s core customer base and were quickly discontinued.
Why It Didn’t Work:

Brand Mismatch: The rugged, rebellious image of Harley-Davidson didn’t align with the concept of luxury fragrances.

Lack of Market Fit: The company ventured too far from its core product, entering a market where it had little expertise or customer base.

Colgate: Frozen Dinners
Colgate is a household name when it comes to toothpaste, but in the 1980s, the company made an unexpected move into the frozen food market with “Colgate Kitchen Entrees.” The product was a complete flop, largely because consumers found it difficult to associate a brand known for dental care with food.
Why It Didn’t Work:

Brand Confusion: Consumers couldn’t reconcile a toothpaste brand with frozen dinners, leading to poor sales.

Overextension: Colgate stretched too far from its core competency, failing to build a credible brand in the food industry.

Key Takeaways for Your Business

Understand Your Market: Successful diversification often comes down to understanding your market and anticipating customer needs. If you’re considering expanding your product line, make sure it’s something your customers want and that aligns with your brand.

Leverage Your Strengths: Use your existing strengths, such as brand loyalty or distribution networks, to support new products. This can give your diversification efforts a better chance of success.

Avoid Overextension: While it’s tempting to branch out, be cautious not to stray too far from what your business does best. Diversification should complement your existing products, not confuse your customers.

Product diversification can be a powerful tool for business growth when done right. It allows you to tap into new markets, reduce risk, and increase revenue streams.

However, it’s important to approach diversification strategically, ensuring that new products align with your brand and meet your customers’ needs. By learning from others’ successes and failures, you can make informed decisions that will help your business thrive.

As a young professional, planning for retirement is a distant priority.

However, starting early with your superannuation contributions can significantly impact your financial future.

Prioritising superannuation now sets the foundation for a wealthier and more comfortable retirement.

Benefits of Early Contributions

1. Maximising Compound Interest

One of the most compelling reasons to start contributing to your superannuation early is the power of compound interest. Compound interest means earning returns on your initial contributions and the interest accumulating over time. The earlier you start, the more time your money has to grow. For example, contributing $5,000 annually from age 25 could result in a substantially larger super balance at retirement than starting the same contributions at age 35.

2. Taking Advantage of Employer Contributions

In Australia, employers must make superannuation contributions on your behalf, known as the Superannuation Guarantee (SG).

Starting your contributions early ensures you maximise these employer contributions throughout your career. Additionally, you can boost your super by making voluntary contributions, further enhancing your retirement savings.

3. Tax Benefits

Superannuation contributions are generally taxed at a lower rate than regular income, providing significant tax advantages.

Concessional (before-tax) contributions, including salary sacrifice arrangements, are taxed at 15%, which is often lower than most individuals’ marginal tax rates.

This tax efficiency helps your super grow faster.

The Power of Compound Interest

Compound interest can significantly increase your superannuation balance over time. The longer your money is invested, the more interest you earn on both your contributions and the accumulated interest.

For instance, if you start with a $10,000 balance and earn a 7% annual return, your balance could grow to over $76,000 in 30 years, assuming no additional contributions. This exponential growth underscores the importance of starting early.

Smart Investment Choices

1. Understanding Investment Options

Most superannuation funds offer various investment options, ranging from conservative to high-growth portfolios. As a young professional, you have a longer investment horizon, allowing you to potentially take on more risk for higher returns. Growth or high-growth investment options typically invest more in equities, which, while more volatile, have historically provided higher returns over the long term.

2. Reviewing and Adjusting Your Investments

Regularly reviewing your investment choices and adjusting them as needed is crucial. Life circumstances, risk tolerance, and market conditions can change, and your superannuation strategy should adapt accordingly. Many super funds offer tools and advice to help you make informed investment decisions.

Integrating Superannuation into Your Financial Plan

1. Setting Financial Goals

Incorporating superannuation into your broader financial plan involves setting clear retirement goals. Determine how much you aim to have in your super by the time you retire and develop a strategy to achieve that target. Use online calculators and tools provided by super funds to estimate your future super balance based on different contribution levels.

2. Regular Contributions and Budgeting

Consistently contributing to your super is key to building a substantial retirement fund. Consider setting up a budget that includes regular voluntary super contributions. Even small, consistent contributions can make a significant difference over time.

3. Seeking Professional Advice

Consulting with a financial advisor can provide personalised guidance tailored to your financial situation. They can help you develop a comprehensive retirement plan, optimise your super contributions, and make informed investment decisions.

Starting early with your superannuation contributions could set you on the path to a more secure retirement. The benefits of compound interest, tax advantages, and strategic investment choices make it a smart financial move for young professionals.

By integrating superannuation into your overall financial planning and making regular contributions, you can maximise your retirement savings and enjoy financial peace of mind in your later years.

Prioritise your superannuation today, and watch your wealth grow for a prosperous future.
